Писатель, историк, эссеист. Популярность к нему пришла, когда в 1809 была опубликована "История Нью-Йорка от сотворения мира до конца голландской династии" ["A History of New York, from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty"], бурлескно-комическое повествование о нравах и традициях города, в основном в те времена, когда он еще назывался Новым Амстердамом [New Amsterdam]. Дидрих Никербокер [Diedrich Knickerbocker], персонаж, от имени которого рассказана "История", стал символом Нью-Йорка. В 1815 переехал в Англию, где продолжал писать новеллы и эссе как из американской, так и европейской жизни: "Книга эскизов" ["The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent."] (1820), "Брейсбридж-холл" ["Bracebridge Hall, or, The Humorists"] (1822), "Рассказы путешественника" ["Tales of a Traveller"] (1824) и др. В первую из этих книг вошли новеллы "Рип ван Винкль" ["Rip Van Winkle" (Rip Van Winkle)] и "Легенда сонной лощины" ["The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow"], в третью - "Дьявол и Том Уокер" ["The Devil and Tom Walker"], ставшие классикой американской литературы. В 1826 занял пост атташе в американском дипломатическом представительстве в Мадриде. Жизнь в Испании оставила заметный след в его творчестве: увлекшись историей и культурой страны, он написал биографию Колумба ["History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus"] (1828), "Хронику покорения Гренады" ["A Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada"] (1829) и книгу сказок и эссе "Альгамбра" ["The Legends of the Alhambra"] (1832). Вернувшись в 1846 в Америку, публиковал эссе и биографическую прозу, в том числе известную биографию Дж. Вашингтона [Washington, George]. Был первым профессиональным писателем Америки, получившим европейское признание. Его стиль во многом остался в рамках британской традиции (В. Скотт, О. Голдсмит и т.д.), сюжеты часто традиционны или заимствованы из европейского фольклора, но красота и грациозность языка и несомненный талант рассказчика обеспечили его произведениям непреходящую популярность
